DUKE SITE READINESS PROGRAM EYES COUNTY

Highlands News-Sun By Kim Leatherman

Highlands County Economic Development and Duke Energy teamed up to present a site readiness plan on land that could potentially attract industrial or manufacturing businesses to the county Thursday afternoon (July 11) at the South Florida State College auditorium.

The properties in question are owned by Ben Hill Griffin Inc., Baxter Troutman and C. Elton Crews Family Ltd. Partnership. Together, the properties total 123 acres directly south of the Nucor Steel.

SFSC RECEIVES GRANT TO HELP PART-TIME STUDENTS

A $40,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County has been awarded to the South Florida State College (SFSC) Foundation Inc., to benefit part-time students who are attending SFSC in fall term 2019 and spring term 2020. 

The grant comes from the Edward K. Roberts Community College Fund, which was established by Roberts as a legacy to support Florida's community colleges and other charitable organizations.

GOING SOLAR: DUKE ENERGY, OVERLAND HOLD SUCCESSFUL OPEN HOUSE, CAREER FAIR

Duke Energy and Overland Contracting Inc. hosted an open house Wednesday night (July 24) at the Lake Placid Government Center. Representatives from both companies felt the night was successful. Overland Contracting Inc. is Duke Energy's contracting partner for the Lake Placid Solar Power Plant, which is currently under construction. The solar plant will be 380 acres off 100 Walker Road, just off U.S. 27.

CITRUS NUMBERS IMPROVE AS STRUGGLES CONTINUE

TALLAHASSEE - Florida's citrus industry ended its growing season on a slight uptick, regaining the Sunshine State's dominance in orange production over California. But struggles remain. 

Overall, the new numbers reflect nearly a 59 percent increase in oranges from the 2017-2018 season.
